How AP scoring works

Every AP exam combines a multiple-choice section, scored by counting correct answers, with a free-response or performance section scored by trained readers using a rubric. Each section is weighted, the weighted points are added into a composite, and College Board assigns 5 (extremely well qualified), 4, 3, 2 or 1 based on that composite. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so never leave a multiple-choice question blank.

composite = Σ (points earned ÷ points possible in section) × section weight

The cutoffs move a little each year, because College Board sets them after the exam to keep the standard for a 3 consistent. This site uses rough estimates, and the page for each exam also shows the official 2026 percentage of students earning each score. Need a score for college admissions too? Exam formats checked on College Board's AP Students site on October 23, 2026. Exams whose 2026 format or scoring we could not verify (such as AP Statistics, AP Physics and AP Psychology) are not listed yet.

Frequently asked questions

How is an AP exam scored from 1 to 5?

Each exam has a multiple-choice section and a free-response section that are weighted (for example 50% each on AP Calculus AB, or 70% multiple choice and 30% Create task on AP Computer Science Principles). The weighted raw score becomes a composite, and College Board converts the composite to a 1–5 score using cutoffs set after each exam.

Does College Board publish the AP score cutoffs?

No. College Board publishes exam format, scoring guidelines and yearly score distributions, but not the composite-to-score conversion for the exam you take. Calculators, including this one, use estimated cutoffs, so treat the result as a guide of about plus or minus one score band near a boundary.

What AP score do I need for college credit?

A 3 is generally the minimum College Board describes as "qualified", and many colleges award credit at 3 or 4. Selective schools often require a 4 or 5, and some give placement but no credit. Always check each college's AP credit policy.

Are the AP exams in 2026 digital?

Many AP exams are fully digital in the Bluebook app (such as AP US History, AP World History: Modern and AP Environmental Science), and others are hybrid, with multiple choice in Bluebook and free response handwritten in a paper booklet (such as AP Calculus, Chemistry and Biology). Digital delivery does not change how the sections are weighted.
