* State fee indexed or recently changed – confirm the current amount with your state. Electricity: EIA (July 2026). Gas: EIA weekly regular gasoline (week of 2026-10-19; state price where EIA publishes one, otherwise the regional average). EV fees: NCSL and state sources, checked October 24, 2026.
What this comparison leaves out
- Purchase price, incentives, insurance and depreciation – only yearly energy and the EV surcharge are compared.
- Normal registration fees that both cars pay.
- Maintenance: EVs skip oil changes but may wear tires faster.

Frequently asked questions
Is an electric car cheaper to run than a gas car?
In most states, yes. Driving 12,000 miles a year, an EV charged mostly at home costs about $861 in electricity at the US average rate, versus about $1,714 of gas for a 30 mpg car at $4.28 a gallon. State EV registration fees and local electricity and gas prices change the gap a lot.
Which states charge an extra fee for electric cars?
41 of 50 states plus DC charge a yearly EV registration surcharge in 2026, from about $50 to $270. Nevada, Arizona, Florida, Alaska, New Mexico, Connecticut, District of Columbia, New York, Massachusetts, Maine charge none.
Where does an EV save the most money?
With our default assumptions the biggest yearly savings are in Nevada ($1,321), Arizona ($1,236), Washington ($1,163), and the smallest in Hawaii ($130), Rhode Island ($315), New Jersey ($371).
