Frequently asked questions
How much is car registration in Texas?
For a car or light truck up to 6,000 lb, renewal is the $50.75 base fee + $7.50 inspection program replacement fee + $1.00 DPS fee + $4.75 processing and handling fee + county local fees (usually $11.50, up to $31.50). In most counties that totals about $75.50. Fully electric vehicles add $200 a year.
How much does it cost to transfer a title in Texas?
The title application fee is $33 in 42 counties (including Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar and Travis) and $28 elsewhere, plus 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax and registration. Example: a $15,000 private-party car with a $16,000 standard presumptive value in Harris County comes to about $1,046.00.
What is the standard presumptive value (SPV) rule?
For used vehicles bought from a private seller, Texas charges 6.25% tax on the greater of the price you paid or 80% of the vehicle’s standard presumptive value. If the car is worth less, a certified appraisal (Form 14-128) can lower the taxable amount. The rule does not apply to dealer sales, gifts or even trades.
What happens if I transfer the title late in Texas?
Tax and title are due within 30 days of the sale. After that the tax penalty is 5% (1–30 days late) or 10% (more than 30 days late), and the late title transfer penalty is $25, rising $25 for each further 30 days up to $250.
Do I still need a safety inspection in Texas?
No – since January 1, 2025 most non-commercial vehicles no longer need a safety inspection, but everyone pays a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee at registration ($16.75 once for a brand-new vehicle, covering two years). Emissions testing still applies in certain counties.
