How to read your gas bill
- Usage is shown in therms, ccf (100 cubic feet) or Mcf (1,000 cubic feet). 1 ccf ≈ 1.037 therms.
- Bills split into a supply (commodity) charge and delivery charges, plus a fixed monthly customer charge. The state averages above include all of them.
- Heating is most of a gas bill in cold states, so December–February bills can be several times the summer bill.

Frequently asked questions
How much is natural gas per therm?
The US residential average was $1.48 per therm ($15.34 per thousand cubic feet) in 2025, including delivery charges. Prices ranged from $0.74 in Idaho to $5.05 in Hawaii.
What is the average natural gas bill?
An average US gas customer used about 59.5 thousand cubic feet (617 therms) a year in 2024. At the 2025 average price that is about $76 a month averaged over the year – winter bills are often two to three times higher than summer bills.
Why is the price per therm higher in summer?
Gas utilities charge fixed monthly fees regardless of use. In summer, when homes use little gas, those fees are spread over fewer therms, so the average price per unit rises even though the monthly bill falls.
How do I convert ccf or Mcf to therms?
One hundred cubic feet (1 ccf) of natural gas contains about 1.037 therms, and 1,000 cubic feet (1 Mcf) about 10.37 therms. Your bill may also show a slightly different local conversion factor.
